Rigaut suicidou-se e, antes, num exercício louvável, tentou estancar a epidemia suicida que alastrou na América. Rigaut escreveu para o New York Times, mas sem efeito. Os jovens continuaram a saltar das pontes e, um deles, morreu voluntariamente num hotel de luxo, tal como Riigaut aconselhara. O episódio precipitou o acontecimento esperado. Apesar da carta para o NYT, Rigaut acabou mesmo por se suicidar.
